LASIK Surgery Quick Facts
· You are awake during the surgery, but you may be given medication to relax.
· Your eyes are numbed with drops and aside from little pressure, you most likely won’t feel a thing during the procedure.
· Typically both eyes are treated during the same visit.
· The procedure generally takes less than 10 minutes per eye (walk in/walk out).
· Approximately ninety-five percent of nearsighted patients participating in FDA Clinical Trials could see 20/20 or better one year after treatment. *(Outcomes may vary)
In general, you must be in good, overall health, have a healthy cornea and experience no significant increase in your prescription within the past year. Several painless comprehensive tests will be performed so that we can completely understand the entire condition of your eyes. These safe and simple tests are designed to detect not only your refractive error but other aberrations within each eye as well. Conditions such as the overall thickness
of your cornea are especially important in LASIK and will be thoroughly examined.
THE PROTECTIVE FLAP
(1) Your eyes will be completely numbed using an “eye drop” anesthesia.
(2) Next, an eyelid holder will be placed over your eyes to help prevent blinking.
(3) Lastly, an instrument called a microkeratome creates the protective corneal flap. While you may feel a little pressure, you will feel no discomfort.n g
The LASIK Process (in a Nutshell)
Formerly, PRK (a form of laser eye surgery) reshaped the cornea by removing its actual surface tissue. Now, the main advantage of LASIK is that it reshapes the corneal tissue (stroma) from the inside. This is good because it preserves the cornea’s sensitive top layer of cells.
The excimer laser is an extremely precise laser that uses ultraviolet light to remove minute amounts of corneal tissue. A very rapid and painless sequence of laser pulses complete the desired correction in a matter of only seconds. Each pulse of the laser removes mere microns of tissue, far less than the thickness of a strand of your hair. This cool temperature light beam is extremely safe because each pulse produces virtually no damage to the surrounding tissue.
Once the laser treatment is complete, the protective corneal flap is carefully returned to its original position and re-bonds naturally with its own tissue in minutes without the need for stitches. We may may apply a bandage to the eyes for a few minutes prior to final examination. Intermittent checks are made by our staff prior to your departure from the surgical center. Since the outermost layer of the cornea isn’t reshaped during LASIK as it is in PRK, there’s very little surface area to heal. This means greater comfort. Antibiotic and anti-inflammatory eye drops may be prescribed after the procedure.he
